Lyrics

1. Keep On Living

Just keep on living baby, and you'll be old like me

just keep on living, and some day you'll be old like me

then you'll think about your past, and your sometime used to be

Didn't I make you feel precious, just like a diamond in the mine?

I made you feel so precious, like a diamond in the mine?

Then I put you in the spotlight, that's when you began to shine

Ooh So many men wanted all that love you had to give

they promised you the moon and stars for all that love had to give

then they put you through some changes that you'd rather not relive

You'll think about my lovin', when I'm sleeping in the ground

you're gonna taste my kisses, and you'll miss the joy we found

then you'll ask yourself again why you did not stay around

You disappeared one day, and never left a clue

like the spirit from my body, you disappeared without a clue

but someday, baby, when you're old, then I'll be haunting you

2. My Hero

“My hero” is what she says when she asks you to save her

“my hero” – you know the sound sounded good to me

But the costume's loose and the cape don't fit

I don't know how to fly, that's the truth of it

Her hero is something I can never be

It was easy to see how bad her luck had been running

she didn't say it but she seemed to want something from me

She told me all she needed was one true friend

her story sounded pretty till I got to the end

Her hero is nothing I will ever be

You want to be the guy who saves somebody

the man people look up to

It's such a good fit, but it's hard to admit

there's some things you just can't do

Her story was no one ever stayed around to help her

the way she told it, her very last chance was me

I hurt my head beating it against the wall

nothing I could do ever helped her at all

Her hero is something I will never be

You want to be the guy who saves somebody

the man people look up to

It's such a good fit, but it's hard to admit

there's some things you just can't do

“My hero” is what she says when she asks you to save her

“my hero” – you know the sound sounded good to me

But the costume's loose and the cape don't fit

I don't know how to fly, that's the truth of it

Her hero is something I will never be

3. I'm Waiting

I'm waiting for the shape of your face

just waiting to see the shape of your face

I'm waiting for the shape of your face

gonna drive out all the others, and take their place

I'm waiting for the shape of your face

I'm thirsty for a sip of your voice

so thirsty for just a sip of your voice

I'm thirsty for a sip of your voice

gonna drink my fill when you say I'm your choice

I'm thirsty for a sip of your voice

I'm hungry for a taste of your lips

so hungry for just a taste of your lips

I'm hungry for a taste of your lips

they gonna send me on a lifetime trip

I'm hungry for a taste of your lips

I can't be living and be waiting too

can't be living and be waiting too

I can't be living and be waiting too

Till you make up your mind what else can I do?

I'm waiting for nobody but you

4. Say My Name

Say my name darlin, it's not unknown to you

say my name, I'm not unknown to you

when we were good together, seems like that's all you'd ever do

I loved to hear you say it, so easy and so plain

You'd call it out so easy, you'd call it out so plain

I'd give a hundred dollar bill, just to hear it one more time again

What's the matter baby, don't you want my loving any more?

You're acting funny honey, don't you want my loving any more?

Was a time now darling, you'd crawl through cut glass to get to my door

It puts me on a wonder, am I that easy to forget?

Puts me on a wonder, am I that easy to forget?

You said you loved me better than any man you ever met

Think about it baby, don't you remember who I am?

Look here in my eyes, don't you remember who I am?

Before you ever learned to speak, I wrote my name in your right hand

5. Two-Legged Mule

I got a two-legged mule

that's workin' on my place

I don't trust his intentions

and I don't like his face

Two-legged mule wanna be kickin' in my stall

If I catch him one time baby, mmhmm won't be doin' no kickin' at all

That mule is shiftless and lazy

he don't wanna pull a plow

he hides around behind the barn

think I'm gonna feed him anyhow

Ahh Two-legged mule wanna be kickin' in my stall

I catch him one time baby, won't be doin' no kickin' at all

That mule has got a sweet tooth

there's nothin' he won't try

He snuck by my kitchen window

and ate up all my pie

Two-legged mule wanna be kickin' in my stall

I catch him one time baby, mmhmm gonna have his hide up on the wall

He hangs around my stable

and pokes his nose inside

if he goes one step further

I'm gonna salivate his hide

Ahh Two-legged mule wanna be kickin' in my stall

I catch him one time baby, won't be doin' no kickin' at all

[He jumped the pen this morning

and chewed up all my grass

but if he gets out one more time

he's gonna be one sorry ass]

6. Take Your Time

Take your time, don't let 'em rush you

say what you got to say

take your time, don't let 'em push you

say it in your own way

Do what you came here to do

no one can do it exactly like you

Take your time, don't let 'em scare you

if you want to you can take all day

Pace yourself, don't let 'em stop you

from going where you want to go

pace yourself, don't let 'em keep you

from learning what you need to know

Keep on going and you'll go far

nobody else can be who you are

Pace yourself, don't let 'em sway you

go ahead and take it slow

Take your time, don't let 'em rule you

play what you got to play

take your time, don't let 'em fool you

play it in your own way

Go ahead and play what you feel

that's the only way to make it real

Take your time, don't let 'em change you

you'll get where you want to go

7. Couldn't Live With It

8. Not Any Place at All

9. We Belong Together

We belong together

we belong together

and I don't care whether

the world is in our way

We can be together

if you believe in forever

in not too long

we can be together to stay

Time and space

are keeping us in our place

we might as well face it

they're working hard to keep us apart

But as long as there's

a way for us to meet somewhere

then I don't care

if it takes a long time to start

If we see together

we can be together

then I don't care whether

the world will say it's wrong

And when we find a place

for us to meet face to face

wherever we're together

is the place where we belong

10. Uh Huh

Hey girl, I see you're doing all right

You got a lot of cute friends and you're going out every night

All the men come around, you know you really got it made

and you can try on a man like a brand new pair of shades

But one of these days you're gonna want to see

Mmhm, what it's like to be loved by me, uh huh uh huh

You know all about love, and that's a fact

You know what to say and just exactly how you're s'posed to act

You got it all down when it comes round to huggin' and kissin'

You feel good like you should even when there's something missing

But one of these days you're gonna want to see

Mmhm, how it feels to be loved by me, uh huh uh huh

There's a kind of love, that really makes you run for cover

And there's a kind of a man who's not like any other lover

You might not exactly know what I'm talkin' about

But I'm here to say there's a way for you to find it out

And one of these days I'm gonna make you see

Mmhm, what it means to be loved by me, uh huh uh huh

11. Turnabout is Fair Play

Girls, girls and women, there's something I got to say

you deserve a whole lot better than the men that you get today

They know how to make a promise, then they break it just as soon as they can

they got too many ways to make you say “Ain't that just like a man?”

It's true that we're hard to live with, don't want to do what you tell us to do

we want what you got but we forget a lot about what you might want too.

But I gotta speak up for my brothers, 'cause they deserve equal time

there's many a man who can't understand how you expect him to read your mind

And it's right to say that you'll only stay with a man who'll be there for you

but it's only fair if you're gonna share, you better be there for him too

If a man ever mistreats you, don't feel like you have to stay

but hang your head in shame, take a piece of the blame, if you treat him the very same way

Now he might do something foolish, if he's under too much stress

but remember in the Garden of Eden, it took two to make that mess

There's different kinds of temptation, and they come to everyone

And someday you might do something that you wish you hadn't done

None of us is perfect, though we all might try our best

But once we start lyin' we give up tryin', except for tryin' not to confess

We all slip up from time to time, it's a human thing you see

and you might make a bad decision, you know, the same as me

When it comes to men and women, we're all sinners, more or less

and who did what first, or which one is worse, is really anybody's guess

So when he asks you to forgive him, consider before you do

you know a day may come your way when you'll need some forgiveness too

12. You Better Change Your Tune

I told you once, told you twice

I'm not gonna say it again

if you don't stop treating the girl like that

I'm not gonna be your friend

You better change your tune

you better do it soon

The girl will do anything for you

but you don't even care at all

you use her like slippers when you kick off your shoes

and let her catch you when you fall

You better change your ways

better do it today

You take her heart and play with it

like it's some kind of Cracker Jack prize

but there'll come a day when you pay for it

I'm just the boy to put you wise

I told you once, told you twice

not gonna say it again

if you don't stop treating the girl like that

your good times are gonna end

You better change your tune

or you'll be sorry soon

You  better change your ways

better do it today

13. We Lie on Your Grave

Dim light at the burying ground, I hardly see the stones

she takes my hand and leads me on, so we can be alone

She brings me to her favorite place, the one nobody knows

I'm careful where I put my feet, we step between the rows

Her silk is rustling softly, we finally arrive

she says she likes to do it here, it makes her feel alive

It's quiet in the darkness, a wind begins to blow

she nestles up against me, I hear her breathing slow

Strange lights burning in her eyes, her fingers pull me down

ah but her lips are busy, she doesn't make a sound

I ask him for forgiveness, he who's buried where we lie

ah but her body's sweet,  it's not my night to die

14. Through with Cool

I wrote this song last, after I already had what I thought were the songs for the album, and it appears last as well.  I first heard things described as “cool” in the Fifties. Then different things got called that every decade since. So the concept of cool remains even today, though I have no idea what kids consider cool at the moment. Is there such a thing as Timeless Cool, which is never uncool? I'd argue yes, of course – I've seen the idea change but some things remain cool forever. I could try to explain. Do I think I'd be understood? Nah.

Through with Cool

I'm through with cool, can't be cool no more

Through with cool, I can't be cool no more

There's women used to love me, not a one is walking through that door

There's beautiful people, everywhere I look today

beautiful people, are everywhere I look today

You know they're young all over, don't want to hear what an old man has to say

I used to be a lover, but now I'm just a friend

used to be a lover, now I'm just a friend

if I keep on much longer, gonna be nothing in the end

I'm through with cool, can't be cool no more

I was once upon a time, but I can't be cool no more

the world's moved on without me, tell me what am I living for?
