Al Basile's musical values were developed in the 50s and 60s, and his work shows the influences of blues, jazz, soul, and gospel music of that era, as well as that of the generation before his birth. His new CD is built on that American roots music of the middle of the 20th century and features the lyric writing of a great contemporary storyteller who also happens to be an award winning poet. His 13th solo CD Mid-Century Modern is built to last, with Al handling the soulful vocals and the lion's share of the solo work on his bluesy, succinct cornet (his five BMA nominations since 2010 are testament to his unique potency on the horn). Produced by Duke Robillard, it has Duke's rhythm section joined by "Monster" Mike Welch on guitar, and Roomful of Blues alumni horns, with a cameo by Duke on two songs. Those conversant with the last century will notice classic musical influences including Louis Jordan, Buddy Johnson, Richard Berry, Albert King, Lee Dorsey, and Slim Harpo – but the message of these songs is Al Basile's alone. They are like no other.

You can keep your love, where's my money?
You been to school, you know I'm not foolin' honey
We proved that there's nothing that I can't lose
So give me something that I can use
Keep your love, where's my money?
You can keep your love, where's my money?
I want every dime and I'm not tryin' to be funny
You lied about hockin' my diamond ring
Now your huggin' and kissin' don't mean a thing
Keep your love, where's my money?
You can keep your love, where's my money?
You got one thing to do before me and you are done
I heard all the baby talk I can stand
Put some greenback dollars right here in my hand
Keep your love, where's my money?
You see me cryin' but that don't mean I'm blue
you see me cryin' but that don't mean I'm blue
because you might not know me the way you think you do
You see me laughin' but you don't know my mind
you see me laughin' but you don't know my mind
if you could look inside me hmmm no tellin' what you'd find
I'm just as nice to people as people let me be
but there's some that just won't let me be nice as I wanna be
so do yourself a favor, and try not to bother me
I might like you or despise you, but I'm keepin' that to myself
Might like you or despise you, I'm tellin' nobody else
so when I smile next time I see you, might wanta check yourself
You may be young, you may be smart
do a lotta good deeds, have a pure heart
don't make no difference, gotta follow the rule
there'll be no ridin' unless you tickle my mule
You can be sweet, you can be kind
have a clean body and a dirty mind
I can't help it, didn't make the rule
there'll be no ridin' unless you tickle my mule
That mule has carried me all of my life
but he don't know nothin' 'bouta man and wife
if he don't feel it, I got no say
guess my mule's just stubborn that way
You deserve better, I know what you're worth
I'd like to ride with you baby, to the ends of the earth
but all my objections get overruled
there'll be no ridin' unless you tickle my mule
A bowlful of rice won't make me fall
I don't care for potatoes at all
I'd rather deal with a piece of veal
I've just got to have meat with every meal
Baked, broiled, fried or grilled
I know that stuff's gonna get me killed
It's an appetite I can't conceal
I've just got to have meat with every meal
I know veggies and fruits are good for me
but I'm still gonna let them be
I'll pay some day when I'm older and wiser
for all of them Slim Jim appetizers
Steaks and chops, beef or lamb
boiled or baked Virginia ham
barbecued ribs to seal the deal
I've just got to have meat with every meal
I know that stuff's gonna shorten my time
you name your poison, I've got mine
I don't care much if it's wrong or right
cause the Tryptophan helps me sleep at night
Turkey – chicken, baked or fried
slab of bacon on the side
I can't help the way I feel
I've got to have meat – mmm it can't be beat
I've just got to have meat with every meal
All you modern lovers think you got something new
but what you're used to doin', somebody else used to do
what I got now people, you might not understand
I can love you like a woman, and love you like a man
You might do it in the open, for everyone to see
but children what you're showing off, that ain't impressing me
believe me people, it ain't all about where you put your hand
I can love you like a woman, and love you like a man
Some lovers make it more, some others make it less
so study up on your lovin', and learn it from the best
if you don't pay attention, you can't do all I can
I can love you like a woman, and love you like a man
Blank dog is a hunter, that's all he knows how to be
somehow he got my name and now he's after me
The hunt is on, that blank dog is on my trail
he's gonna call my number, he don't know how to fail
My days are going quicker, my life is rollin' on
there's just a short time comin', there's been a long time gone
The hunt is on, that blank dog is on my track
he's gonna get me goin' where there ain't no goin' back
I can feel him getting' closer, he's comin' up behind me
wherever I try to hide, I know he's gonna find me
The hunt is on, that blank dog is on my heels
if he ain't after you, you don't know how it feels
My hands are getting' shaky, my eyes are gettin' dim
when I look in a mirror, I wonder who is him?
The hunt is on, that blank dog is on my track
he's gonna get me goin' where there ain't no goin' back
I haven't had a real good time since nineteen eighty-five
I look in the Sunday papers to see if I'm alive
The hunt is on, that blank dog is on my trail
he's gonna call my number, he don't know how to fail
I carry these blues everywhere I go
carry these blues for everyone I know
I got portable blues for folks on the street
tailor made blues for each one I meet
Carry these blues everywhere I go
I carry these blues all around the world
carry these blues for men women boys and girls
Got fast acting blues for the man in a hurry,
soothing blues for the kind that's inclined to worry
Carry these blues all around the world
I carry these blues every summer fall winter and spring
carry these blues they're a cure for most anything
When the mailman brings you that Dear John letter
Blues in this bottle bound to make you feel better
Carry these blues everywhere I go
I carry these blues every day and night
carry these blues long as I can stand upright
When you need a little something in your coffee cup
medicinal blues gonna stir you up
Carry these blues every day and night
I carry these blues everywhere I go
carry these blues for everyone I know
When you got a problem and you can't unlock it
there's a key-shaped blues right here in my pocket
Carry these blues everywhere I go
No truth to the rumor but they don't care
got their mind made up anyway
People gonna talk - all they wanna
whether or not they got something to say
Talk about a man they never met
talk about a woman they wanna forget
talk about you, talk about me, talk about them
If there's a way to take you down
gonna talk about it all over town
never let the facts get in the way when they condemn
No truth to the rumor but they don't care
got their mind made up anyway
People gonna talk - all they wanna
whether or not they got something to say
Talk about a place they never been
talk about things they never seen
talk about her, talk about him, talk about you
When it comes to gossip and such
they don't need to know very much
don't bother them a bit - when none of it is true
No truth to the rumor but you don't care
got your mind made up anyway
And you're gonna talk - all you wanna
whether or not you got something to say
You don't know what you're talking about
but you never have one doubt
talk about him, talk about her, talk about me
Make up your mind from the very first word
then you repeat everything you heard
never give a thought to the way you ought to be
No truth to the rumor but you don't care
got your mind made up anyway
You're gonna talk - all you wanna
whether or not you got something to say
Listen to the Elders, they've been where you want to go
Listen to the Elders, they know what you want to know
You think that they come from somewhere else,
but talking to one is like talking to yourself
Because the Elders, they're just you plus time
Listen to the Elders, don't just pass on by
Try your luck, step up and look one in the eye
You think they got nothing to say to you
But they've already done what you're about to do
Because the Elders are just you plus time
Listen to the Elders, because they survived
they got burned but they learned how to stay alive
You're still trying to figure out right from wrong
Cause you haven't even been yourself that long
Well the Elders are just you plus time
Listen to the Elders, they know how to bear the pain
Since we all got to suffer it's enough for us to share it again
Life's got a lot to put you through
Just keep on living you'll be an Elder too
Because the Elders are just you plus time.
Crossing the desert I walk by night
it's too hot by day, sun's too bright
not one signpost, not one spark
crossing this desert in the dark
There was a place for water, I left it behind
is there more up ahead for me to find?
How much longer can I go without
step after step, the end in doubt?
Stars up above me don't make a sound
nothing's stirring for miles around
if something goes wrong there's no one to help
crossing over by myself
Step after step I sing about you
it's a crying shame what blame can do
nobody near me to hear my call
crossing this desert, that is all
We ought to look up to big trees
providing us all that shade
Big trees never stop growing
you might think they got it made
But big trees are falling
and nobody hears the sound
even the last tree standing
is already halfway in the ground
Big trees have lasted winters
they've lasted through summers too
What little trees only dream about
Big trees already do
Big trees are falling...
When you get to be a big tree
you know how to stick around
Then they come with saws and axes
and all try to cut you down
Big trees are falling...
Big trees have grown the tallest
they're the nearest to the sun
But the closer they get to heaven
the quicker their life is done
Big trees are falling...
All that summer we both turned thirteen
me and that little girl were nowhere to be seen
Come on baby, lie under the house with me
It's cool and it's quiet there, that's where I long to be
Our parents used to worry, where did we go
disappear every afternoon, little did they know
Come on baby, lie under the house with me
It's cool and it's quiet there, that's where we like to be
I know what you're thinking, it wasn't that way
we were just two kids, and that's where we liked to stay
Come on baby, lie under the house with me
It's cool and it's quiet there, that's where I long to be
We were telling secrets, had nothing to hide
lying hand in hand, lying side by side
Do you remember Cheryl, lying under the house with me?
It's cool and it's quiet there, that's where we like to be
There by her side all summer long
I have to wonder, when did the world go wrong?
Come on baby, lie under the house with me
It's cool and it's quiet there, that's where I long to be
