Last Hand

Last Hand

This is a concept album which tells the story of a May-December romance in twelve songs. Follow the progress of the relationship from song to song. It's also my first record as producer, and I'm backed up by just a keyboard trio, the better to let the listener focus on the songs and my acting out the character with my singing voice.

1. It Ain't Broke

I've lived a long time, I learned my lesson

I got some answers that'll keep you guessin'

Styles make fights, but pound for pound

I'm a mighty handy man to have around

If you need a fixer, I'm your guy

If you heard me say it, it's no lie

I ain't laughin' cause it's no joke

If I can't fix it, it ain't broke

Take my word or make sure you try to

You're gonna want done all the things that I do

After all these years I can say with pride

I won't stop working till you're satisfied

If you need a fixer, I'm your guy

If you heard me say it, it's no lie

I ain't laughin' cause it's no joke

If I can't fix it, it ain't broke

When everyday worries have you feeling low, now

get yourself a man with a lot of knowhow

Life can bring you down but have no fear

I can make your troubles all disappear

If you need a fixer, I'm your guy

If you heard me say it, it's no lie

I ain't laughin' cause it's no joke

If I can't fix it, it ain't broke

2. Invisible Man

When I was a boy I was a Smilin' Jack

used to be some of those girls smiled back

Now most of them kept on walking right by me

but every now and then one would stop and try me

Years go by and I become a man

I keep smiling just because I can

Women keep passing and looking at me

I can still tell when they like what they see

I keep on living and now I'm told

I'm not experienced, I just got old

Women walk by me and don't even look

I might just as well go smile at a book

All of a sudden I'm invisible, man

Nobody's saving me a place in her plan

Women have booted me clear off the sphere

I'm so invisible I'm not even here.

3. Don't Toy With Me

Don't toy with me honey, I'm not in the mood

That's why I'm not grinning, I don't mean to be rude

You're giving me a look so impossibly sunny

I got to believe you're just trying to be funny

You must have friends over by the pool

watching you get a rise out of that old fool

Good as you're looking, you know just what to say

to get me to make a big mistake with you today

Your voice is low and you sound sincere

You act like you really truly want to be here

Talking to me like you want to be friends

But we both know how that story ends

There's no use pretending that you want any more

You know I've been through all of this before

Must be a reason that I can't see

Just can't believe you're talking to me

4. What Would You Be Doing?

I didn't mean it baby, I hate to see you cry

Didn't mean it baby, you know I hate to see you cry

I wanted to believe you, but I'm just an ordinary guy

Looking at you darling, just as fine as you can be,

looking at you darling, just as fine as you can be

What would you be doing with a beat up man like me?

Why would you be wanting to be seen around the town

why would you he wanting to be seen around the town

and have to watch the old men grin, and all the women frown?

OK I'll believe you baby, I'll take you at your word

I'll believe you baby, and take you at your word

You say you want me anyway, no matter what you've heard

5. I Could Get Used to This

I had it together, just flying solo

I knew the drill and I was doing all right

Then she found a switch that I didn't know, so

everything dark got suddenly bright

But I could get used to this

Haven't felt it since God knows when

Starting all over with a touch and a kiss

I could get used to this again.

It's been so long I forgot how to care

But I begin to remember it seems

with someone who really is willing to share

the nightmares and the sweetest dreams

And I could get used to this

Being the man I could have been

Starting all over with a touch and a kiss

I could get used to this again

How lucky can any old veteran be?

How many ever get a second chance?

I thought I'd be crawling alone to the sea

Who'd ever guess I'd be getting to dance?

And I could get used to this

with a beginning instead of an end

Starting all over, a touch and a kiss

I could get used to this again

6. Don't

Don't move – hands on the clock on the wall

Don't move – moon and the stars in the sky

Earth don't turn while this candle burns

and my baby can't say goodbye

Don't stop – this love she's bringing to me

Don't stop – or I don't know what I'd do

time don't race, just run in place

so my baby can't say we're through

Lying here watching her sleeping

I have to hold my breath

This is so new, and impossible too

It's scaring me half to death

Don't wait – for time to tear us apart

Don't wait – let it be what it wants to be

Love don't say that we've had our day

and my baby won't say it to me

7. After I'm Gone

Go out tonight baby, and have yourself a natural ball

Why don't you go out tonight baby, and have yourself a natural ball

I'm fine right here, don't feel like going out at all

I know that you got friends that you never get to see

know that you got good friends you never get to see

Why not call some of them, instead of spending all your time with me

Don't get me wrong, you know I hate to see you go

don't get me wrong, I always hate to see you go

But you're gonna need those good friends when I'm not around any more

You oughta think about your life, 'cause time keeps moving on

Think about your own life, darling, 'cause you know time keeps moving on

You're gonna be alive for such a long time, mmmhmm after I'm dead and gone

8. Has He Got a Name?

I looked at those pictures you posted online

It looks like you're having a hell of a time

I'll bet you were feeling the best you can feel

That guy standing next to you, say what is his deal?

You can't help looking like Belle of the Ball

Your friends are all fine but you outshine them all

I'm sure you all drew quite a lot of attention

Who else was with you, or didn't you mention?

I turned in early, didn't hear you come in

I couldn't keep my eyes open till then

Don't have to be quiet on my account, girl,

when you got into bed I was dead to the world

I'm glad that you did it, it did you some good

Make it a regular Friday? You should

Looks like your friends are all glad that you came

This guy standing near you, has he got a name?

9. The Problem is Me

I just don't trust you  baby, that's all there is to it

I don't trust you baby, and that's all there is to it.

It's time to make a change, and I'll have to be the one to do it

If you've done me any wrong, it's something I can't see

If you've done me any wrong, you know it's something that I just can't see

I guess we got a problem, and the problem is me

I hear you talking to me, hear every word you say

Hear you talking to me, hear every word you say

It should be easy to believe you, I just have to find a way

There's a man inside me, scared to be hurt again

A little man inside me, scared he'll be hurt again

But if I'm gonna love you - I've got to stop listening to him

10. Second Wind

I'm really feeling satisfied with me and you again

What was getting old has started feeling new again

I think we finally got our second wind

We've got an understanding and we don't get upset

I have to say that every day is getting better yet

When it comes to second chances, how lucky can you get?

Oh, your doctor left a message and said for you to call

He only took a minute, just said that you should call

Didn't give a reason why, or really anything at all.

Hey, why don't we go out tonight and let's try something new

Something that we've never done, but always wanted to

Who's gonna stop us now, from anything we want to do?

11. Closer to the Bone

Ah but your face is so hollow and gray

I hate to see you looking this way

You nod your head just as if you heard

but you're not listening to a single word

Cause it's closer to the bone

Closer to the bone

Closer than I could ever be

Closer to you than you are to me

You're taking that poison they told you would help

It's killing you quicker than sickness itself

You say that you're fighting, but all I can see

is someone who's slipping away from me

Cause it's closer to the bone

Closer to the bone

Closer than pleasure, closer than pain

Closer than the blood running through your veins

Closer than your breath is to the air

closer than the future we thought we'd share

closer than the bed where we sleep at night

closer than your sex and your appetite

Your smile's too tight, it's only a mask

You'd just deny it if I bothered to ask

Still you can't fool me, I know that you're shaken

Your very soul has been overtaken

Cause it's closer to the bone

Closer to the bone

It's closer than a lover, closer than a friend

It's bringing you closer to your end

12. Time Heals Nothing

Thunderheads are perching like birds on a line

Thunderheads are perching like birds on a line

Lightning flash is taking, taking its own sweet time

People tell me dark skies are just clouds passing over

Thy say that heavy dark sky is just clouds passing through

But these clouds ain't moving and it's all on account of you

This ain't the way, the way it's supposed to be

Time is playing some kind of evil trickery

The first one to go was supposed to be me

They say that it gets better ahhh the longer you're gone

and time will heal a little with every new dawn

But time heals nothing – the hurt goes on
